Passage

The old lighthouse on Cramer Point had not been lit for eleven years. When Joon was posted there as the new caretaker, the village elders shook their heads. "No ships come here anymore," they said. But Joon was full of resolution, though he had little hope of changing anything.

In the first week, he discovered why the light had failed. A family of otters had made a nest inside the mechanism, and their playful biting had severed the main cable. Joon laughed despite himself. He cleared the nest and repaired the wire, but the bulb was long dead.
