Reading Passage

The Rainy Day Discovery

(1) The sky turned a strange shade of green-grey as Amelia walked home from school. She pulled her uniform jacket tightly around her, wishing she had brought an umbrella. The wind began to whistle through the empty playground, pushing dried leaves into small dancing circles.

(2) By the time she reached the void deck of her block, the rain had started. It came down in sheets, hammering the concrete and creating a curtain of water at the staircase. Amelia sighed and sat on the bench, watching the storm. Her shoes were already soaked through.

(3) Then she noticed a small calico cat huddled near the bicycle rack. It was shivering, its fur plastered flat against its tiny body. The cat's eyes were wide and frightened. Amelia's heart softened; she could not leave it there.

(4) She took off her jacket and gently placed it over the cat. The animal stopped trembling and let out a small purr. Amelia smiled, forgetting her own cold hands. At that moment, her neighbour Mr. Tan appeared with a large umbrella and laughed. "You are a kind girl," he said.

(5) The rain slowed to a drizzle. Amelia and Mr. Tan walked up together, the cat nestled safely inside her jacket. She realised that helping someone smaller had made the gloomy day feel brighter.
