Passage: "The Lost Camera"

(1) The monsoon rains had turned the hiking trail into a muddy river. Jia Wei slipped for the third time, hissing a curse as cold water seeped into his boots. He had promised his sister he would film the summit for her, but the borrowed camera was now missing, lost somewhere on the climb.

(2) "We should turn back," said Marcus, teeth chattering. His thin jacket was no match for the wind. "Your sister will understand."

(3) Jia Wei shook his head. "She's in the hospital, Marcus. This is the only thing that makes her smile." He scanned the rocks, eyes narrowing against the rain. A flash of red caught his attention — the camera strap, snagged on a low branch.

(4) Marcus groaned but followed as Jia Wei clambered down the slope. The branch whipped back and lashed Marcus's arm, leaving a red welt. He bit his lip to keep from crying out.
