Reading Passage

The Rainy Day Discovery

(1) The sky turned a strange shade of grey as Aisha walked home from school. She pulled her red umbrella tightly over her head because the wind was pushing the rain sideways. Puddles formed quickly on the pavement, and her shoes were already wet at the toes.

(2) Suddenly, Aisha noticed a small brown bird sitting under a bus stop shelter. The bird was shivering and did not fly away when she came close. Its tiny body looked fragile, and one wing seemed to hang lower than the other. Aisha felt a pang of worry in her chest.

(3) She remembered what her science teacher had said about helping injured wildlife. Gently, Aisha placed her umbrella beside the bird to give it more cover. Then she took off her scarf and laid it near the bird like a soft wall. The bird blinked but stayed still.

(4) Aisha did not want to leave the bird alone, but she knew her mother would be concerned if she was late. She used her phone to take a photo of the bus stop and sent it to her mother with a short message. Her mother replied that she would come with a small box.

(5) While waiting, Aisha spoke softly to the bird. "You are safe now," she whispered. The rain continued to tap on the umbrella like hundreds of little fingers. Slowly, the bird stopped shivering and closed its eyes.

(6) When Aisha's mother arrived, they carefully lifted the bird into a ventilated shoebox. At the animal clinic, the vet said the wing was only sprained. "This young girl did the right thing," the vet told Aisha's mother. Aisha smiled, feeling proud and warm despite her damp clothes.
