Passage A: The Lost Cat
(1) The rain poured down without mercy. Amir huddled under the void deck shelter, his shoes soaked through. He had been searching for his neighbour's cat, Mimi, for over an hour.
(2) "Mimi! Where are you?" he called out, but only the sound of thunder replied. His heart pounded as he pictured the small grey cat shivering in a drain.
(3) Just then, a soft meow came from behind the rubbish bins. Amid the storm, the tiny creature blinked up at him with frightened eyes. Amir scooped her up and felt her trembling body slowly calm.
