Answers
Primary 6 PSLE Mathematics Quiz - Data Analysis (Answer Key)
Total Marks: 40
Topic: Average of a Set of Data
Section A Answers (1 mark each)
1. Total = average × number = 12 × 4 = 48
Teaching note: Average = Total ÷ Count, so Total = Average × Count.
2. Total = 5 + 9 + 11 + 15 = 40; Average = 40 ÷ 4 = 10
Teaching note: Add all values, then divide by how many numbers.
3. Average = 48 ÷ 6 = 8
Teaching note: Direct use of Average = Total ÷ Count.
4. Total = 20 × 3 = 60; Third = 60 − 18 − 22 = 20
Teaching note: Find total first, then subtract known values.
5. Total = 10+20+30+40 = 100; Average = 100 ÷ 4 = 25
6. Average = 1750 ÷ 25 = 70
7. Each number = average = 7 (all equal)
8. Average = 60 ÷ 5 = 12
9. Total = 4.5 × 10 = 45
10. Total = 80+90+70 = 240; Average = 240 ÷ 3 = 80
Section B Answers (2 marks each)
11. Total of 5 = 34 × 5 = 170 kg
New total = 170 + 40 = 210 kg
New average = 210 ÷ 6 = 35 kg
Marks: 1 for total, 1 for average.
12. Mon–Fri total = 15 × 5 = 75
6-day total = 75 + 25 = 100
Average = 100 ÷ 6 = 16⅔ books (or 16.67)
Marks: 1 for total, 1 for average.
13. Total of 4 = 18 × 4 = 72
Total of 3 = 16 × 3 = 48
Removed = 72 − 48 = 24
Marks: 1 for totals, 1 for answer.
14. Total = 19 × 4 = 76
12 + 18 + 22 = 52
x = 76 − 52 = 26
15. Total = 70+80+90+60 = 300
Average = 300 ÷ 4 = 75
16. Let second = y, first = 2y, third = y+5
Total = 2y + y + (y+5) = 4y+5
Average 25 → total = 75
4y+5 = 75 → 4y = 70 → y = 17.5
Numbers: 35, 17.5, 22.5
Marks: 1 for equation, 1 for values.
Section C Answers (3 marks each)
17. Girls total = 78 × 12 = 936
Class total = 75 × 20 = 1500
Boys total = 1500 − 936 = 564
Boys average = 564 ÷ 8 = 70.5
Marks: 1 girls total, 1 class total, 1 boys avg.
18. (a) Total 5 days = 30 × 5 = 150
20+35+25+40 = 120
x = 150 − 120 = 30
(b) New total = 150 + 50 = 200
New avg = 200 ÷ 6 = 33⅓ (or 33.33)
Marks: 2 for (a), 1 for (b).
19. First 3 total = 120 × 3 = 360 mm
Next 4 total = 80 × 4 = 320 mm
7-month total = 680 mm
Average = 680 ÷ 7 = 97⅐ mm (≈97.14)
Marks: 1 each part.
20. Original total = 11 × 5 = 55
After 2 years, original 4 + new = 12 × 5 = 60
Original 4 after 2 yrs = 55 + 8 = 63
Left friend age now = 63 − (60 − 9) = 12 → left at 12 − 2 = 10 years old
Alternative: Let left age = L. (55+10−L+9)/5 = 12 → 74−L=60 → L=14 now → was 12? Check: 2 yrs later all +2: 55+10=65, minus L+2 plus 9 = 60 → L+2=14 → L=12. Actually left at 12.
Correct: 12 years old
Marks: method 2, answer 1.
