Section B: Reading Comprehension – Passage 1 (8 marks)
Read the passage below carefully and answer Questions 5 to 12.
Lena stood at the edge of the school field, her heart pounding like a drum. The annual Sports Day was finally here, and she had been chosen to represent her class in the 100-metre sprint. She adjusted her shoelaces for the third time, her fingers trembling slightly.
"Hey, Lena! You look like you're about to faint!" teased Marcus, jogging up beside her. He flashed a grin. "Relax. You've been training for weeks. Your legs know what to do."
Lena forced a smile. "I know. It's just... everyone will be watching."
"Everyone watches the race, not you," Marcus said, his tone softening. "Just focus on the finish line. Imagine the tape breaking across your chest. That's what Coach Tan always says — run your own race."
The starting whistle blew. Lena took her position, crouching low. The track stretched out before her, eight lanes wide. She blocked out the cheers, the shouts, the fluttering flags. On your marks... Get set...
Bang!
Lena exploded forward. Her arms pumped, her legs drove hard against the ground. For the first thirty metres, she was neck-and-neck with the runner in Lane 3. Then she remembered Marcus's words: Run your own race. She found her rhythm, her breathing steady, her strides lengthening. The finish line loomed closer. Five metres. Three. One.
She burst through the tape, chest heaving, a grin spreading across her face. Hands clapped her on the back. "You did it!" Marcus shouted, beaming. "Second place! You beat your personal best by two seconds!"
Lena laughed, breathless. "I couldn't have done it without you."

Section C: Reading Comprehension – Passage 2 (8 marks)
Read the passage below carefully and answer Questions 13 to 20.
The pangolin is one of the most unusual mammals in the world. Often called the "scaly anteater," it is the only mammal completely covered in scales. These scales are made of keratin — the same protein found in human fingernails and hair. When threatened, a pangolin curls into a tight ball, its overlapping scales forming an almost impenetrable armour that protects its soft underbelly.
There are eight species of pangolins, found in Africa and Asia. All eight species are threatened with extinction. Pangolins are hunted illegally for their scales, which are used in traditional medicine, and for their meat, which is considered a delicacy in some cultures. Despite international laws banning the trade, pangolins remain the most trafficked mammal in the world.
Pangolins are nocturnal and solitary creatures. They have poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell, which they use to locate ants and termites — their primary food. A pangolin's tongue can be longer than its body! It is sticky and extends deep into ant nests to lap up insects. A single pangolin can eat up to 70 million insects in a year, making it a natural pest controller.
Female pangolins give birth to one baby at a time. The baby rides on its mother's tail for the first few months of life, holding on tightly as she forages. Pangolins can live up to 20 years in the wild, but their slow reproduction rate makes it difficult for populations to recover from poaching.
Conservation groups are working hard to protect pangolins. They patrol protected areas, rescue pangolins from traffickers, and educate communities about the importance of these unique animals. You can help by spreading awareness and refusing to buy products made from pangolin parts.
-
Why is the pangolin called the "scaly anteater"?
-
What are pangolin scales made of?
-
How does a pangolin protect itself when threatened?
-
Which of the following is NOT a reason why pangolins are hunted?
(1) For their scales used in traditional medicine
(2) For their meat, considered a delicacy
(3) For their claws, used to make jewellery
(4) For illegal wildlife trade
Answer: [_____] -
What does the word "nocturnal" in the third paragraph mean?
(1) Active during the day
(2) Active at night
(3) Living in trees
(4) Living in water
Answer: [_____] -
How does a pangolin catch ants and termites?
-
State two ways conservation groups are helping to protect pangolins.
(i) _____________________________________________________________________
(ii) _____________________________________________________________________ -
Based on the passage, explain why it is difficult for pangolin populations to recover from poaching.

Primary 4 English Quiz - Comprehension (Answer Key)
Total Marks: 20
Section A: Visual Text Comprehension (4 marks)
1. Answer: (2) To invite residents to a community event
Marks: 1
Explanation: The poster advertises a "Community Garden Open Day" with details like date, time, venue, activities, and free admission. Its purpose is to attract residents to attend. Option (1) is incorrect because the poster does not teach planting; it lists a workshop as one activity. Option (3) is wrong — nothing is being sold. Option (4) is incorrect because the organiser is already the Residents' Committee; they are not recruiting.
2. Answer: (3) Cooking Demonstration
Marks: 1
Explanation: The poster lists four activities: Planting Workshop, Garden Tour, Storytelling Session, and DIY Pot Painting. "Cooking Demonstration" is not mentioned.
3. Answer: (2) 10 June 2024
Marks: 1
Explanation: The poster clearly states "Register by 10 June" with a QR code. The event is on 15 June, so registration closes before the event date.
4. Answer: (2) Greenfield Residents' Committee
Marks: 1
Explanation: The organiser is stated at the bottom of the poster: "Organised by Greenfield Residents' Committee." The venue is Greenfield Community Centre, but they are not the organiser.
Section B: Reading Comprehension – Passage 1 (8 marks)
5. Answer: trembling (or "pounding" / "nervous" is not a word in the text; "trembling" describes her fingers)
Marks: 1
Explanation: In the first paragraph, "her fingers trembling slightly" shows physical signs of nervousness. "Pounding" describes her heart, which also indicates anxiety, but "trembling" directly modifies her action. Accept "trembling" or "pounding" as the word indicating nervousness.
6. Answer: Marcus meant that the spectators are focused on the competition itself, not on judging Lena personally, so she should not feel self-conscious.
Marks: 1
Explanation: This is an inferential question. Marcus is reassuring Lena that the crowd's attention is on the race outcome, not on her as an individual, to help her relax.
7. Answer: Coach Tan said to "run your own race" / focus on the finish line and imagine the tape breaking across your chest.
Marks: 1
Explanation: Directly from the text: "That's what Coach Tan always says — run your own race." The advice is to focus on one's own performance, not others.
8. Answer: (2) She settled into a comfortable running pace
Marks: 1
Explanation: "Found her rhythm" is an idiom meaning she established a steady, comfortable pace. The following phrases "breathing steady, strides lengthening" support this. Options (1), (3), and (4) are unrelated to running.
9. Answer: (2) Proud and happy
Marks: 1
Explanation: The text says: "a grin spreading across her face" and "Lena laughed, breathless." She is pleased with her achievement (second place, personal best). Not disappointed, angry, or confused.
10. Answer:
(i) She adjusted her shoelaces (for the third time).
(ii) She crouched low at the starting position / took her position on the track.
Marks: 1 (½ each)
Explanation: Both actions are explicitly stated in the passage before the race begins. Accept any two valid preparations: adjusting shoelaces, taking position, crouching low, blocking out distractions.
11. Answer:
(a) False — Lena came in second place, not first.
(b) True — Marcus encouraged her, gave advice, and celebrated her achievement.
Marks: 1 (½ each)
Explanation: (a) The text states: "Second place!" (b) Marcus teased gently, gave calming advice, repeated coach's words, and cheered "You did it!" — all supportive actions.
12. Answer: "You beat your personal best by two seconds!" (spoken by Marcus)
Marks: 1
Explanation: This direct quote from Marcus confirms Lena improved her previous best time. It is the only sentence in the passage that explicitly states an improvement in timing.
Section C: Reading Comprehension – Passage 2 (8 marks)
13. Answer: It is covered in scales (like a scaly animal) and eats ants (like an anteater).
Marks: 1
Explanation: The passage states: "Often called the 'scaly anteater,' it is the only mammal completely covered in scales" and "primary food: ants and termites." Both features explain the nickname.
14. Answer: Keratin (the same protein found in human fingernails and hair).
Marks: 1
Explanation: Directly stated: "These scales are made of keratin — the same protein found in human fingernails and hair."
15. Answer: It curls into a tight ball, and its overlapping scales form an almost impenetrable armour that protects its soft underbelly.
Marks: 1
Explanation: From the text: "When threatened, a pangolin curls into a tight ball, its overlapping scales forming an almost impenetrable armour that protects its soft underbelly." Both parts (curling + scales as armour) needed for full mark.
16. Answer: (3) For their claws, used to make jewellery
Marks: 1
Explanation: The passage lists two reasons for hunting: scales for traditional medicine and meat as a delicacy. Claws for jewellery is not mentioned. Illegal trade is the channel, not the reason.
17. Answer: (2) Active at night
Marks: 1
Explanation: "Nocturnal" means active during the night. The passage says they are "nocturnal and solitary creatures" and have "poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell" — typical nocturnal adaptations.
18. Answer: It uses its long, sticky tongue (which can be longer than its body) to extend deep into ant nests and lap up insects.
Marks: 1
Explanation: The passage describes: "A pangolin's tongue can be longer than its body! It is sticky and extends deep into ant nests to lap up insects." Key points: long, sticky, extends into nests, laps up insects.
19. Answer:
