The Mysterious Garden
One rainy afternoon, eight-year-old Amir was bored at home. He looked out of his bedroom window and noticed something unusual at the back of his grandmother's garden. Behind the old wooden gate that had been closed for as long as he could remember, he saw a flash of bright yellow light.
Amir put on his raincoat and rubber boots. He ran downstairs and told his grandmother what he had seen. She smiled mysteriously and said, "Ah, the garden gate. I was wondering when you would finally notice it."
His grandmother handed him a small brass key. "This key has been in our family for many years," she explained. "It is time for you to see what is behind the gate."
Amir walked carefully along the muddy path. The rain had stopped, and the sun was beginning to peek through the grey clouds. When he reached the gate, his hands trembled slightly as he turned the key in the rusty lock.
Behind the gate was the most beautiful garden Amir had ever seen. There were flowers of every colour — red, purple, blue, and gold. Butterflies danced among the blossoms, and a small fountain bubbled gently in the centre. On a stone bench sat a wooden box.
Amir opened the box and found a letter inside. The letter was written by his late grandfather. It read: "Dear Amir, if you are reading this, it means you have found the garden I planted for our family. Take care of it, and it will bring you joy for years to come."
Amir felt tears well up in his eyes. He looked around the garden and made a promise to his grandfather that he would look after it.

1. (3) finished
- Reasoning: "Last night" signals past tense. The past tense of "finish" is "finished."
2. (2) are

Common Mistakes & Teaching Notes
- Q1, Q3: Students often confuse past and present tense when time markers (e.g., "last night," "yesterday") are present. Reinforce scanning for time clues.
- Q2, Q4, Q6, Q8, Q10: Subject-verb agreement with collective nouns ("flock," "team," "news") and indefinite pronouns ("each," "neither...nor") remains a common error area. Drill singular vs. plural identification.
- Q30: Students may correct "practises" instead of "plays." Both corrections are acceptable; accept either.
- Q32: In reported speech, students frequently forget to shift "tomorrow" → "the next day" along with "will" → "would."
- Q38, Q42: Inferential questions require students to use textual evidence. Remind students to quote directly from the passage to support their answers.
