The Lost Puppy
One rainy afternoon, ten-year-old Mei Ling was walking home from school. She noticed a small brown puppy sitting alone under a bus stop shelter. The puppy was shivering and looked very hungry.
Mei Ling knelt down and gently patted the puppy. It wagged its tail weakly. She looked around for its owner, but there was no one nearby. She decided to take the puppy home.
When she arrived home, her mother was surprised. "Mum, I found this puppy at the bus stop. It has no collar or tag. Can we keep it?" Mei Ling asked eagerly. Her mother hesitated but finally agreed to let Mei Ling care for the puppy while they tried to find its owner.
Mei Ling gave the puppy some warm milk and a blanket. The puppy drank the milk quickly and fell asleep. Mei Ling named it "Cocoa" because of its brown fur.
The next day, Mei Ling and her mother put up posters around the neighbourhood with Cocoa's picture. Within a week, a kind elderly man called to say that Cocoa was his missing pet. Mei Ling was sad but knew she had to return Cocoa to its rightful owner.
When the elderly man came to collect Cocoa, he thanked Mei Ling and her mother warmly. He told them that Cocoa had wandered away from his garden three days earlier. Mei Ling hugged Cocoa goodbye, and the elderly man promised to send her photos of Cocoa from time to time.

TuitionGoWhere Practice Paper - English Language Primary 4
Answer Key – Version 2 of 5
Section A: Grammar MCQ (10 marks)
| Qn | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | (3) finished | The clue "yesterday" indicates past tense. "Finished" is the simple past form of "finish." |
| 2 | (2) are | With "neither…nor," the verb agrees with the subject closest to it. "Dogs" (plural) is closest, so the plural verb "are" is correct. |
| 3 | (3) cooked | "Last Sunday" signals past tense. "Cooked" is the simple past form. |
| 4 | (4) were | The relative clause "who ________ late" refers to "pupils" (plural), so the plural past tense "were" is correct. |
| 5 | (2) was | "Each" is a singular subject and takes a singular verb. "Was" agrees with the singular subject "each." |
| 6 | (4) had started | The past perfect tense ("had started") is used for an action completed before another past action ("arrived"). |
| 7 | (2) rains | In a Type 1 conditional (real/likely future), the "if" clause uses present simple ("rains") and the main clause uses future ("will be cancelled"). |
| 8 | (1) is | "Team" is a collective noun treated as a singular unit here, so the singular verb "is" is correct. |
| 9 | (2) goes | "Every Saturday" indicates a habitual action (present simple). The subject "she" (third person singular) takes "goes." |
| 10 | (2) are | The relative clause "that ________ on the table" refers to "books" (plural), so the plural verb "are" is correct. |
Section B: Grammar Cloze (8 marks)
| Qn | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | went | Past tense of "go" — the passage describes a completed past event ("Last Saturday"). |
| 12 | arrived | Past tense of "arrive" — consistent with the past narrative. |
| 13 | was | Past tense of "is" — "weather" is singular, so "was" is correct. |
| 14 | were | Past continuous ("were spraying") — "elephants" is plural, and the action was ongoing at that moment. |
| 15 | were | Past tense of "are" — "My little brother and I" is a plural subject. |
| 16 | had | Past tense of "have" (used as a main verb meaning "ate/consumed") — past narrative. |
| 17 | ordered | Past tense of "order" — consistent with the past narrative. Alternative: had (also acceptable). |
| 18 | was | Past tense of "is" — "food" is singular/uncountable, so "was" is correct. |
Marking Note for Q17: Accept "ordered" or "had" as both are grammatically correct in context. Award 1 mark for either.
Section C: Editing (6 marks)
| Qn | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 19 | Mistake: was Correction: were | "Children" is a plural subject and requires the plural verb "were," not the singular "was." |
| 20 | Mistake: have Correction: has | "She" is a third-person singular subject and requires "has," not "have." |
Marking Note: Award 1 mark for correctly identifying both the mistake and the correction. If only one part is correct, award 0 marks.
Section D: Sentence Synthesis & Transformation (6 marks)
| Qn | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | The boy who is wearing a red cap is my cousin. | The relative pronoun "who" replaces "he" and connects the two sentences. The relative clause ("who is wearing a red cap") is embedded into the main sentence. |
| 22 | The cat sat on the mat while the dog lay under the table. | The conjunction "while" joins two simultaneous actions in one sentence. |
| 23 | Lina said that she would visit Grandma the next day / the following day. | In reported speech: "I" → "she"; "will" → "would"; "tomorrow" → "the next day" or "the following day." |
Marking Note for Q21: Award 2 marks for a fully correct sentence with proper use of "who." Award 1 mark if the relative pronoun is used but the sentence has a minor error (e.g., missing verb). Award 0 marks if "who" is not used or the sentence is grammatically incorrect.
Marking Note for Q22: Award 2 marks for a correct sentence using "while" to join both clauses. Award 1 mark if "while" is used but the sentence has a minor error. Award 0 marks if "while" is not used.
Marking Note for Q23: Award 2 marks for correct reported speech with all changes (pronoun, tense, time word). Award 1 mark if one element is incorrect (e.g., "will" not changed to "would"). Award 0 marks if two or more elements are incorrect.
Section E: Vocabulary Cloze (8 marks)

| 26 | asked / requested / invited / told | The librarian gave Amina a task. "Asked" is the most natural fit. |
| 27 | happy / honoured / proud / excited | Amina felt positive about being trusted with the task. |
